Kaleb Johnson Endures Misfortune During Jerry Richert Memorial

Inside Line Promotions – NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (Sept. 8, 2025) – Kaleb Johnson showcased speed with little luck last weekend during the 25th annual Jerry Richert Memorial at Cedar Lake Speedway.
The Team DGRD driver was in contention both nights during the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series doubleheader before misfortune arrived.
It began on Friday when Johnson qualified quickest in his group. He then advanced from fourth to second place in a heat race to move into a dash. A fifth-place finish in the dash lined Johnson up on the outside of the fifth row in the main event.
“We qualified good and did what we needed in the heat race to make it into the dash, but there wasn’t a lot of moving around,” he said. “In the feature, I felt we had the best car in traffic. I could go where people weren’t and could slide people and still maintain speed. I don’t think I would have beat J.J. (Hickle) in clean air, but we were very happy with our speed and the progress we made.”
Johnson hustled from 10th to a runner-up result, but he was disqualified for not scaling after the race.
“I didn’t hear Steve (Sinclair) on the RACEceiver and went off the track to the scales,” he said. “There was nobody there and there was a sign that said closed with cones in front of it so I rolled to my pit. I should have just stopped.”
The team returned to the track on Saturday for the event finale. Afternoon storms made for a fast track and a late night. Johnson won his heat race and garnered the pole position for the main event thanks to a favorable inversion.
“I knew it was going to be tough, especially if I didn’t get the jump,” he said. “The outside was the place to be and I didn’t get the jump I needed so I ran second early. I felt I could stay with the leader in clean air and traffic. In traffic some of the cars were a lot slower than we were going. We got through the first two or three clean. I went to go around another lapped car. He got tight and pushed up. I had nowhere to go and ended up in the wall.”
Johnson’s car was too damaged to continue following the incident just before the midpoint of the feature. He was credited with a 15th-place result.
“It was a frustrating weekend, but we had speed every time we hit the track so there’s always positives to bad weekends,” he said. “It’s been a frustrating four or five weeks. On the positive side, the race car has speed. We’ve been fast most of the time. We just need a little luck on our side.”
Johnson is preparing to make his debut at two new tracks this weekend with Midwest Open Wheel Association races on Friday at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill., and Saturday at Spoon River Speedway in Canton, Ill.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge,” he said. “I seem to do decent when I go to new tracks. Jacksonville is a tight bullring and Spoon River looks fun so I’m eager to race at both tracks.”
