Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (Aug. 25, 2025) – Kaleb Johnson’s title defense at Huset’s Speedway took a tumble on Sunday at Huset’s Speedway.
The Team DGRD driver had set quick time during his group and advanced from fourth to second place in a heat race to move into the feature redraw. Johnson pulled the No. 5 to line up fifth and he was running sixth on Lap 9 when another driver in front of him got sideways on the cushion in turn three.
“I thought we qualified pretty good,” he said. “I didn’t feel too great, but rebounded well in the heat race. I was pretty confident going into the feature. The first few laps we were getting things sorted and I felt better as the laps went on.
“I tried to avoid a spinning car and it bit me. I tipped over. At first the Jacob’s Ladder was out of it so I knew I couldn’t go to the top with how thick the curb was. I was a little worried at first. Another red came out and we got back in there and fixed what we needed to.”
Johnson returned to the track in 19th and gained a trio of positions before another red flag just after the midpoint of the 25-lap feature. Johnson restarted 20th after another pit stop and rallied for a 10th-place result. It marked his first time of not finishing in the top five during a points race at Huset’s Speedway this season.
“It could have been a lot worse,” he said. “We had a lot of help in the work area that got us back out there and that gave us a car capable of driving through the field. Thanks to everyone who helped us.”
Johnson competed with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink the previous two nights in North Dakota.
On Friday, Johnson was seventh quickest in his group at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks. A fifth-place finish in a heat race advanced him into the main event.
“We qualified pretty good, but I didn’t get the start I needed in the heat race and fell back a spot,” he said. “I felt good in the feature. I got by (Logan) Schuchart, who ended up with a top five. I felt better as the race was going on. I went to the top and biked it up. As I gathered the car I felt my left rear off the ground and the next thing I knew I was upside down.”
Johnson was running 16th when the early crash occurred, resulting in a DNF.
The team then ventured to Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo on Saturday for the first time in Johnson’s racing career. He timed in ninth quickest overall before placing sixth in a heat race and 19th in the A Main.
“It was a good feeling to not wreck,” he joked. “It’s been a rough month of August, but that’s how racing goes sometimes. We had good speed when the track had moisture. We tried a few things and it didn’t work when the track slicked off. We weren’t stuck into the track.”
Johnson will return to Huset’s Speedway this Friday for a tripleheader, beginning on Friday with the Bull Haulers Brawl presented by Folkens Brothers Trucking – the final points race of the season at the track. Johnson enters with a 12-point lead in the track’s championship standings. The L.G. Everist Huset’s Shootout presented by Ace Ready Mix and Myrl & Roy’s Paving featuring the World of Outlaws follows on Saturday and Sunday.
