Inside Line Promotions – EAGLE, Neb. (Sept. 10, 2019) – A promising evening evolved into a challenging finish for Kaleb Johnson last Sunday at Eagle Raceway.

Johnson’s night began well as he made the redraw for the feature after advancing from seventh to second in his heat race.

“We caught a bit of a break in our heat when a wreck on the first lap moved us up a bit on the restart,” he said. “The track was still tacky and made it difficult to pass so we were fortunate to make the redraw.”

Johnson’s good fortune continued as he drew the pole starting position for the night’s main event.

“I was able to lead about the first 11 to 12 laps,” he said. “We had the car setup to run the bottom because the bottom had worked pretty well for us in the heat race and the top of the track was kind of rough.

“I got passed a lap before a red came out. After the restart, the car went away a little bit. Then I tried to run the top and hit a hole and almost hit the wall. I became a little cautious after that since there was really no need to wreck anything. I felt lucky to hang on to 10th.”

It was a disappointing finish after the strong start for Johnson, who had finished fourth the prior week at the track during the biggest 305 race of the year – the RaceSaver Nationals.

“It was a little frustrating after starting on the pole and leading for a while,” he said. “Probably the most frustrating part was that it came right after we had done so well there in the big race the week before. But that stuff happens. We had a car to roll into the trailer afterward so that was good.”

Adding to the weekend’s disappointment was the cancellation of a scheduled race with double features at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., the prior evening due to rain, which included a rescheduled feature from earlier in the year.

Johnson will take this week off and is looking forward to his next competition at his home track of Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., during the Casey’s Open Wheel Nationals Sept. 20-21.

“I think we’ll have a good field of cars for the race since it pays well, even more than the Jackson Nationals,” he said. “That makes it more exciting and fun. It’s especially nice for us since it’s just 10 miles from our shop.”
